Do Quasi-Hyperbolic Preferences Explain Academic Procrastination? An Empirical Evaluation

Traditional neoclassical thought fails to explain questions such as problems of self-control. Behavioural economics have explained these matters on the basis of the intertemporal preferences of individuals and, specifically, the so-called (β, δ) model which emphasises present bias. This opens the way to the analysis of new situations in which people can adopt incorrect indecisions that make it necessary for the government to intervene. The literature which has developed the (β, δ) model and its implications has generated a categorisation of people that is widely used but which lacks a systematic empirical evaluation. It is important to value the need for this public action. In this article, we develop a method which makes it possible to verify the main implications that this model has to explain the procrastination of university students. Using an experimental time discount task with real monetary incentives, we estimate the students’ β and δ parameters and we analyse their correlation with their answers to a series of questions concerning how they plan to study for an exam. The results are ambiguous given that they back some of the model’s conclusions but reject others, including a number of the most basic ones, such as the relation between present biases and some of the categories of people, these being essential to predict their behaviour

William Stanley Jevons and Francis Ysidro Edgeworth: Two Pioneers of Happiness Economics

This paper opens up with some issues which are fundamentally relevant to how Happiness Economics studies are presently conducted, and then sets out to show that for prominent neoclassical authors W. S. Jevons and F. Y. Edgeworth the object of Economics was to maximise happiness and that, in this, they coincide with current economists working in this research area. We show that the interest in happiness is not new but leans on a significant economic tradition linked to the Utilitarian philosophy that dates to the second half of the 19th century

Los componentes del pleno empleo: Una perspectiva macroeconómica

El objetivo de este trabajo consiste en realizar una sistematización sobre los principales tipos de desempleo que han sido identificados en los estudios teóricos y empíricos sobre el mercado de trabajo. Tras examinar dichas clasificaciones, se presenta un enfoque ecléctico de las tipologías del desempleo. En dicho enfoque, el desempleo observado podría descomponerse en cinco tipos de desempleo: friccional, voluntario, estructural, clásico y keynesiano. La suma de los cuatro primeros componentes representaría el pleno empleo —desempleo de equilibrio—, aunque la consideración de los efectos de histéresis nos lleva hacia una noción de equilibrio cambiante

Responsabilidad social corporativa y performance financiero: treinta y cinco años de investigación empírica en busca de un consenso

El objetivo de este artículo consiste, en primer lugar, en ofrecer un mapa de las posibles relaciones teóricas entre la responsabilidad social corporativa y el performance financiero. En segundo lugar, se sistematiza la evidencia empírica sobre estas relaciones, disponible a nivel internacional. Para ello, tras analizar los problemas metodológicos más habituales en este tipo de literatura, se pone el énfasis en la aportación realizada por las investigaciones meta-analíticas aparecidas en los últimos años. Concluimos, especialmente en lo que llevamos de siglo XXI, que existe una clara vinculación positiva entre la responsabilidad social corporativa y el performance financiero.This article offers a map of the theoretical relations between corporate social responsibility and financial performance. Moreover, it reviews the international empirical evidence about such relations. In order to do that, we have analyzed the methodological problems, based on recent meta-analytical research. We conclude that there is a positive correlation between corporate social responsibility and financial performance, particularly along the present 21st century

Efficiency in the management of urban water services. What have we learned after four decades of research?

The analysis of efficiency in the management of urban water services offers valuable information both for the managers of this service and for public bodies in order to introduce improvements in business practices and in the design of public policies. Since the pioneering study carried out by Ford and Wardford (1969), there have been many attempts to follow this line of research. Due to the importance of the subject and the volume of publications in this field, we believe it is necessary to provide a balance of the work carried out over the last four decades. In this overview, we look at the main questions which have arisen over this period, we provide a synthesis of the results obtained and, finally, we point out some challenges for future research.Water utilities; Efficiency; Firm behaviour; Water

¿Futuro imperfecto? Distopía y arquitectura moderna en "La naranja mecánica" de Stanley Kubrick

This article tackles with the architectural treatment in the film A Clockwork Orange. Aimed at creating the image of a near future conceived by Burgess in his novel –even though he did not describe it–, Kubrick resorted to the most contemporary design, filming especially in Greater London locations as well as in sets. The outcome is considered to be very modern and became one of the main keys to the visual impact of the film. Thus, we will study its different spaces and analyze the use of modernity by Kubrick.En este artículo se aborda el tratamiento de la arquitectura en la película La naranja mecánica. Para crear la imagen del futuro cercano concebido por Burgess en su novela (que no describe), Kubrick recurrió al diseño más contemporáneo, rodando sobre todo en localizaciones del Gran Londres, aunque también en decorados. El resultado es de una gran modernidad y una de las claves del impacto visual del filme. Estudiaremos sus distintos espacios y analizaremos el uso que Kubrick hace de la modernidad
